Amid the heavy flow of traffic on Grand Southern Trunk Road, a number of migratory bird species have found their nesting spot in the middle of Melmaruvathur lake.

These birds, including painted storks and spot-billed pelicans, previously migrated to the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary during October-March for breeding, birders say.

However, this season, as the water level in the Vedanthangal lake has decreased, a small group of winged visitors have descended on the lake.

Though the area has witnessed large movement due to the Thaipoosam festivities, the green cover in the middle of the lake and a bund preventing human access have turned this water body into a preferred spot for birds to nest and breed.
