Kovan detained for protesting over JNU row

Over 57 representatives of various student outfits and Makkal Kalai Ilakiya Kazhagam and folk artiste Kovan were detained on Thursday here for staging a protest against the arrest of Jawaharlal Nehru University Student Union president Kanhaiya Kumar. The released them in the evening.

The protesters, including members of Revolutionary Students Youth Front, demanded the release of Mr. Kumar and removal of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) from all educational institutions. The ABVP had been in the forefront of the protest at JNU in Delhi and also of the protest over academic Rohith Vemula's suicide at University of Hyderabad.

Kovan, who had earlier been arrested and slapped with a sedition case for singing a song that allegedly insulted Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, came up with a song against the Central government.
