A woman and a man, who kidnapped a 15-year-old girl from a school in Nungambakkam here on Wednesday, have been arrested. The girl was rescued by the police after she was released near Vadapalani.

The police said the girl, a resident of Kodambakkam, was studying in a private school in Nungambakkam. On Wednesday, she did not board the van after the school dispersed at 1.30 p.m. The van driver, who did not find her inside the school, informed her parents.

The parents, who rushed to the school, received a ransom call for ₹10 lakh even as they were talking to the principal. The caller threatened to kill the child if her demand was not met. The parents immediately complained to the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Nungambakkam, Ravi Abraham, and a special team was formed to trace the girl.

With the police shadowing them, the parents handed over cash to Ejaz Ahamed, who runs a hardware shop in Vadapalani, as demanded by the kidnapper. The police and the parents picked the girl up after she was released near a hospital in Vadapalani.

Later, the police apprehended Ejah Ahamed after raiding his shop. Based on his confession, they arrested Moshina Parveen, 33, of Arumbakkam. Parveen, a postgraduate, told the police that she plotted the kidnap of the girl, who was her relative’s daughter, to repay ₹5 lakh debt to a jeweller. She picked up the child from the school after telling her that she was her mother’s classmate. Parveen took the girl in an autorickshaw to two malls and released her after getting confirmation that the ransom had been paid.

Both Parveen and Ahamed were remanded in judicial custody on Thursday after being produced in a court.
