Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Su. Thirunavukkarasar on Friday said that Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder and actor Kamal Haasan had told All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi about his interest in a possible alliance.

“When Kamal Haasan met Rahul Gandhi [in New Delhi], he expressed his intention to ally with the Congress. As the president of the Congress, his intention to work with the party is a source of happiness. I congratulate him for that,” he said.

Mr. Haasan had recently said that his MNM would ally with the Congress if it exits its alliance with the DMK.

On Thursday, DMK treasurer Duraimurigan, responding to the statement, said, “Kamal is a good friend. He is my favourite actor these days. However, he is still young and immature in politics. Therefore, there is no need to take that comment seriously. The Congress is in an alliance with us, that will continue. We will not rock this boat and nor will the Congress. There is no need to respond to constant speculation over this alliance,” he said.

The actor also came under attack from BJP’s national secretary H. Raja on Thursday for his criticism of his party.

“Kamal Haasan? He has spent 68 years of his life earning money through acting and now, enters politics to fool the people. I am a member of the BJP since its inception. Those who wanted to leave this country over a film should not speak about the BJP,” Mr. Raja said in Tirunelveli.
