Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani was sworn-in as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court by Governor Banwarilal Purohit at a ceremony in Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Sunday. The Governor also administered the oath of office to the new Chief Justice.
Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Supreme Court judge and former Chief Justice of Madras High Court Indira Banerjee, judges from the Madras High Court, members of the Council of Ministers, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and other senior officials were present.
Justice Tahilramani's appointment as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court followed the elevation of her predecessor Chief Justice Indira Banerjee to the Supreme Court.
According to the roster of the Madras High Court, the new Chief Justice, along with Justice M. Duraiswamy would hear from August 13 Public Interest Litigations relating to rights of women, all criminal appeals and other criminal cases which are to be heard by a Division Bench, besides hearing appeals arising out of orders of the Central Administrative Tribunal.
Born in 1958, Justice Tahilramani started practice in the Bombay High Court as well as City Civil and Sessions courts in Mumbai, after enrolling in the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa in 1982. She also taught 'Law of Crimes' as a part-time teaching faculty in a law college between 1987 and 1993.
She was elevated as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2001 and has also served as its acting Chief Justice.
