A special court for elected representatives is set to pronounce the judgement in a defamation case against MDMK leader Vaiko on Monday. The defamation case was filed against him in 2007 by the DMK government for allegedly defaming then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Mr. Vaiko had addressed a letter to then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi in which he made certain insinuations, the prosecution alleged.
Based on a report on the letter that appeared in a newspaper, the defamation case was filed.
Last June, the Madras High Court declined to discharge the MDMK leader from the case. The case was taken by the special court for elected representatives for trial. The court reserved its judgement and will pronounce it on Monday.
Recently, Mr. Vaiko was sentenced to a prison term of one year by the special court for elected representatives in Chennai for a speech he made 10 years ago. The judgement in that case was pronounced days before he filed his nomination papers for a Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu.
