A web series and a bilingual feature film on Jayalalithaa are on the cards

Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s niece J. Deepa has filed a civil suit in the Madras High Court to restrain film director AL. Vijay and producer Vishnu Vardhan Induri of Telangana from making a biopic based on her aunt’s life.

The plaintiff has also sought to restrain acclaimed director Gautham Vasudev Menon from making a web series based on her aunt’s personal and political life without disclosing the entire script and obtaining her explicit consent.

The petitioner claimed that Mr. Vijay and Mr. Induri had selected even the cast for their movie and had booked Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut to play the role of Jayalalithaa on screen. They had also gone to the press announcing the project. Similarly, Mr. Menon too had decided to cast actor Ramya Krishnan in the web series.

She alleged that all three film makers were proceeding only with monetary benefits in mind and with scant regard to the need to protect the privacy of individuals.

“Dr. J. Jayalalitha is a great political personality and the said life story cannot be filmed without adding the life of the Applicant (Ms. Deepa) as part of the film. In such an event, the same would amount an interference of the privacy of the Applicant. More so, the Applicant is not aware of the story, script, screen play, dialogue, etc., prepared by the Respondents in producing the said movie and for the web serial.

“The Applicant fears that the Respondents may portray Dr. J. Jayalalitha and her personal life in the life story and the Applicant’s part in the life story may also be depicted by the Respondents in their own version which may affect the family privacy and the Applicant’s privacy,” an affidavit filed in support of her plea to restrain the release of the biopic and the web series read.
