A new ‘red’ building on Velachery Main Road is being given the finishing touches. The J7 Velachery Police Station will soon function from this facility, located near the Electricity Board office. The demolition of an old building housing the station necessitated the construction of the new one.

Two decades ago and considerably dilapidated, the old building had overshot its usefulness by a long chalk. During rains, the building would get flooded, a problem the police personnel found extremely challenging. A police official who had served at the police station earlier says even a light shower would lead to flooding of the premises. The building had gradually gone below road level, and it was trapping rainwater.

During the 2015 floods, the police personnel had to work outside the building due to flooding. The new building being constructed by the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Board at a cost of Rs. 95 lakh is a two-storey building with stilt car parking. A senior official of the Chennai City Police said the new building had been constructed with modern amenities. A ramp is being constructed for the physically-challenged. There is also a proposal to have a small cabin in the parking area, especially for taking complaints from the physically-challenged as well as senior citizens. While in the first floor the building would house Law and Order, the Crime department would be housed in the second floor.
