Empowering children with knowledge and the right attitude goes a long way in ushering in a positive environment in society, experts said at an annual conference of Tamil Nadu Foundation Inc. (TNF), a non-governmental organisation on Saturday.

Speaking at the conference themed ‘Building capabilities and, bettering lives’ Raja Krishnamoorthy, management consultant and actor, said: “From corporate companies to educational institutions, most people are only taught to be competitive. There is confusion between teaching them to be capable and competitive.” Teaching children to offer and collaborate should be the fundamental goal, he added.

Maya Gaitonde, honorary general secretary of Bala Mandir Kamaraj Trust, said when the focus is primarily on cleaning the environment – referring to the Swachch Bharat campaign – people should go beyond and also focus on changing the attitude towards empowering children from the economically backward families.

Virendra Singh, founder of Pardada Pardadi Educational Society, New Delhi and P. Thukkaram and N. Reguraj, centre coordinator and chairman respectively of TNF were among those who spoke.
