A final year M.Tech student allegedly committed suicide by hanging in his hostel room on the IIT campus here on Wednesday.

According to police sources, Nitin Kumar Reddy (24) was found hanging from the ceiling on Wednesday evening.

The victim had sent a message to his father Lakshman Reddy, a director of Defence Research Development Organisation working with the Indian Space Research Organisation in New Delhi, that he would commit suicide.

“Nitin, a resident of Yamuna Hostel, was dejected after his project was extended by six months. On seeing the SMS, his father alerted a local friend and asked him to check...by then Nitin had taken the extreme step.

He was found hanging from the ceiling fan,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Adyar) V. Sithananan said.

The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem, sources said. The Velachery police are investigating.
