A final year student of IIT- Madras, hailing from Palakkad, Kerala, committed suicide in the hostel on Saturday.

According to the police, the victim was a final year student of the B.Tech-M.Tech (Dual Degree) Naval Architecture programme at the institute. The security staff found him hanging from the ceiling in his room.

The Kotturpuram police sent his body to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem and registered a case of unnatural death. Investigation revealed that the student was not regular to class. He also had issues with his family and often argued with them over the phone, the police said.

“This is indeed an irreparable loss to not just the institute and the family but to society as a whole,” IIT-M said in a statement.

The State’s Health helpline 104 provides counselling for people in distress. Also Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline is 044-24640050.
