Two Chennai-based writer-translators, Indran and Tamil Selvi, have been chosen for the Sahitya Akademi's prize for translation for 2011.
Indran, pseudonym of B.G. Rajendran, has been selected for his Tamil translation of a collection of Odia poems, titled “Perhaps birds might have slept” and Dr. Tamil Selvi for her Kannada translation of a Tamil work, Naan Saravanan Illai, Vidya [I am not Saravanan but Vidya].
The prize carries an amount of Rs. 50,000 and a copper plaque which will be presented to the translators and other recipients of the prize at a function to be held in August, according to a release issued by the Sahitya Akademi. A poet and art critic, Mr Indran has published over 20 books in both Tamil and English including eight collections of poetry. He is a visiting professor on Indian Art History for Sivaji Ganesan Film Institute, SRM University, Chennai.
Dr.Tamil Selvi, Head of the Kannada department in the Madras University, has published 24 books in Kannada and Tamil. She was the recipient of several awards including that of the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award.
This year, for Telugu, S. Jayaprakash, had been chosen for his translation of the first Tamil novel, Pratapa Mudaliar Charitram.
