Elumazhai from Valasaravakkam stood teary eyed in front of Joint Commissioner of Police, South, C. Mageshwari, at St. Thomas Mount.
She patiently heard him out, as he narrated his grievances. Elumazhai said, “I studied upto fourth standard. I worked really hard all these years, and left ₹15 crore-worth immovable property for my only son. At present, I am living in a small hut inside the property. My son does not bother to take care of me, and asks me to vacate the premises.” The officer ordered her subordinates to bring his son.
She warned the son that he would be arrested unless he took care of his father. She also instructed police personnel to watch him and initiate action against him if he ignores his father again.
Just like Elumalai, a number of people queued up to see if their grievances would be redressed, at one of the special camps conducted by the city police for the first time, on law and order issues. People with monetary disputes, family disputes and disputes with neighbours and tenants, gathered in large numbers. The special camps are held so that joint commissioners of police personally hear out the grievances of public and redress them expeditiously.
Joint Commissioner of Police, East, R. Sudhakar, came down from the podium erected for the special camp held at Egmore, and interacted with the complainants. He heard complaints of women on anti-social elements in a particular area and immediately instructed his team to intensify vigil in the location.
Mr. Sudhakar said: “The special camp is a one-stop arrangement for redressing grievances of the public. All officers of the zone are present here and we are disposing of complaints quickly.”
Inaugurating the special camp for redressing grievances of the public on law and order issues at New Washermanpet, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan said: “ Every week, JCs of Law and Order, Traffic, will sit in a place within their respective areas. It is an opportunity for the public. In case the police station booked a case and there was no further action, you can come here. If you feel there was no solution from the police station, or that you are not satisfied with the action, then this is the place you can appeal at. We will also get back to you on the action taken on your complaint within 15 days.”
People have been advised not to approach the special camps straightaway, without first trying their luck at the police stations. They can approach inspectors/ sub-inspectors at the police stations with their complaints round-the-clock. Inspectors and sub-inspectors have been instructed to be present at the station.
