Heritage Fresh supermarket attacked in Mylapore

The Heritage Fresh supermarket at Mylapore was ransacked on Thursday by two men, allegedly in retaliation to the encounter killings of 20 men from Tamil Nadu by Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday.

The men had come on a motorcycle and entered the supermarket which had over 10 staff members and a few customers around noon. They damaged the signboard by hurling stones and entered the supermarket. They then damaged the cash register, computers and shelves using clubs. They raised slogans against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

The duo then came out and asked local children to ransack the store. They did not attack any staff or customers inside. According to police, two men were detained by Mylapore and they claimed to be Tamizhar Ezhuchi Iyakkam members.

The supermarket is believed to be owned by an Andhra Pradesh-based group. Other outlets including one in Gopalpuram have been closed. Police security has been stepped up for such establishments in the city.
