Helpdesk for transgenders in Koyambedu

A helpdesk may soon be established to address the grievances of transgenders in the busy Koyambedu area.

Indian Community Welfare Organisation (ICWO), a city-based non-governmental organisation and Tamil Nadu Aravanigal Association (THAA) are planning to set up the helpdesk and also maintain a list of transgender persons. This was decided at a meeting attended by police personnel attached to Koyambedu police station, NGO representatives and transgender persons held here on Friday.

A. Johnson, inspector (crime) attached to a police station in Koyambedu, advised the transgender persons not to provide shelter to strangers and also develop legal knowledge. A.J. Hariharan, ICWO’s secretary, said a legal awareness programmes would be held for the transgender community. Counselling and educational and medical support would also be provided through the helpdesk. THAA’s secretary A.V. Kiruba said transgender persons should be involved in Friends of Police activities. Police personnel must also be sensitised about the transgender community.
