In a setback to the office-bearers of Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Artistes Association), led by actor Sarath Kumar, the Madras High Court on Friday granted an interim stay on the notification of the election, which was scheduled for July 15.

Passing interim orders on a plea by actors Vishal, Nasser and Karthi, Justice K. Ravichandrabaabu said the court has found a prima facie case for grant of interim order of stay of the notification and for interim injunction restraining the Nadigar Sangam from enforcing it.

The judge directed defendants in both the civil suits to file their respective written statements within two weeks from June 26 and the eventual reply within two weeks thereafter. The latest development comes after the rival group, lead by actor Mr. Nasser, Mr. Vishal and Mr. Karthi, filed a petition asking for a change in venue, date of election and an independent observer to oversee the election process.

Reacting to the latest developments, Mr. Vishal, who has launched a vigorous campaign all over Tamil Nadu, was happy that the interim order has gone their way.

“We are happy with the interim order. We are sure that there will be fair elections now. We had to go to the court only because our representations to Nadigar Sangam office-bearers were ignored,” he said, adding, “when political protests are held on a Sunday, why not hold elections on a Sunday? We wanted a former judge to oversee the election process because that it is the only way to ensure free and fair elections.”

As for appointing a retired judge, the judge said the court was not inclined to go into those allegations at this stage and refrained from expressing any view on the applications.

Actor Sarath Kumar, president of the association, said that he would be filing an appeal to vacate the stay on Monday.

“Our top priority is to conduct elections as soon as possible since the current term has ended. There seems to be some grievances and members have every right to seek legal recourse. In the past, elections were held on a weekday, and we have abided by all the norms and laws,” he said.
