HC seeks report on sand mining

The Madras High Court has given two weeks to the Central and State governments to file a detailed statistical report on river sand mining in the State and the transactions of sand miners.

A Division Bench comprising Justices M.M.Sundresh and R.Mahadevan ordered the notice.

In a PIL, K.Kumar of Walajahpet in Vellore district submitted that sand mining was taking place in the Palar at several places, including Perungal Medu, Tiruparkadal, Esaiyanur, Poondi and Vanivedu .

Illegal sand miners had created a huge sand yard at Poondi village, posing a challenge to the authorities. The State and the Central governments never took action against the illegal activities of sand miners, it said.
