‘Halt all buses at Vijaya Nagaram bus stop’

Commuters complain that despite an MTC order, most of the buses do not halt at the stopover in Medavakkam

Residents of Vijaya Nagaram, Medavakkam, near Santhosapuram, have requested the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to halt all bus services at Vijaya Nagaram bus stop, located on Velachery Main Road.

Bus services 95 (Tambaram East – Thiruvanmiyur), 99 (Tambaram West – Adyar), V51 (Tambaram West – T. Nagar), 5A (Tambaram East – T. Nagar) and 51 (Tambaram West – Velachery) ply through the arterial road. Often, commuters will signal the drivers to halt buses at the bus stop. For, they do not have any clue about which buses would stop at the stopover. At times, even the drivers of white-board buses avoid halting the buses at the stopover.

J. Prakash, a resident of Santhosapuram, says, “Often, we have to request the conductor and the driver to halt the bus at Vijaya Nagaram bus stop. Otherwise, the bus would then stop at Santhosapuram, which is more than a kilometre away. We have to walk all the way from Santhosapuram to reach Vijaya Nagaram or shell out money for autorickshaws.”

Commuters proceeding to areas beyond Medavakkam, including Jalladampet, Vellakal, Pudhu Nagar, Velachery and T. Nagar are forced to wait for a long time at the bus stop.

For, not all the buses that ply through the stretch will halt at the stop. As a result, commuters are forced to rely on private modes of transport or take autorickshaws. A few commuters take shareautorickshaws and get down at Medavakkam Koot Road bus stop and then take buses to reach the above-mentioned areas.

It must be noted that as per an MTC Order numbered 112/ 32012/2017, all bus services that ply through the stretch must halt at the stopover. The Order was passed on August 23, 2017.
