Guidelines for recycling plants at buildings soon

The State government is set to frame guidelines for recycling plants on the premises of buildings in two weeks.

On Monday, Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani said all local bodies will ask owners of buildings to commission recycling facilities and rainwater harvesting structures in three months.

Officials said the common building rules will be followed for commissioning recycling plants in new building constructions.

Following demands from residents’ associations on resolving issues on “lack of clarity on recycling plants in existing buildings,” the civic agencies have started brainstorming sessions on how to promote recycling.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner G. Prakash said the guidelines for recycling plants in buildings will be framed in two weeks.

“We will soon have a joint meeting with Metrowater and Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority. It is unrealistic to ask owners of small buildings to set up recycling plants. “We will arrive at some modalities to isolate the properties eligible for exemption from setting up recycling plants,” said Mr. Prakash.

Officials said brainstorming sessions will be conducted by officials to prevent “cross departmental confusion” on the issue. Recycling guidelines will be applicable only for bigger properties.

Chennai Corporation officials said all commercial buildings, schools, colleges and apartment complexes will have to commission recycling plants.

But the decision on the area of the residential apartments that have to commission recycling plants will be taken only next week.

“Residents will have to commission recycling plants within three months from the announcement of the guidelines,” said an official.
