An 18 year old girl was stabbed to death in Nungambakkam on Friday night allegedly by a youth after she started ignoring him. Within a few hours of the incident, the 22-year-old accused was arrested.

Sources with Teynampet police said the victim, R.Sangeetha, a first year student of B.Sc. Botany at Quaid-e-Millath College for Women, was in a relationship with the accused, Mani, a native of Perambalur, for the last two years.

Sangeetha lived with her parents and a younger sister in a rented house on Kodambakkam High Road, Nungambakkam. Mani, who works at a biryani shop in the area, was staying on the first floor of the same building, sources added.

“Sangeetha had a misunderstanding with Mani and stopped talking to him. In the last few days, he confronted her several times and tried to talk but she refused. Enraged, Mani stopped Sangeetha outside her house at 9.30 p.m. on Fridaywhen she returned from a fancy store in Nungambakkam where she had taken up a part time job,” said M. Ravi, Inspector of Police, Teynampet.

When the girl tried to evade him again, Mani took out a knife, stabbed her in the chest and fled, the officer said.

Sangeetha's family members and neighbours rushed to her help after on hearing her cries. They took her to a nearby hospital but she died on the way. Police was alerted and a team from the Teynampet police station launched a hunt for Mani. “We combed the Nungambakkam area and rounded up Mani at the Valluvar Kottam bus stop around 4 a.m. on Saturday. He was trying to flee the city,” Mr. Ravi said.

Mani was arrested and booked for murder. He was remanded in judicial custody and lodged at the Puzhal central prison on Saturday.

Sangeetha's body was handed over to her parents on Saturday afternoon after a post-mortem was conducted at the Government Royapettah Hospital.
