A 35-year-old man was hacked to death by a four-member gang in Aynavaram police station limits on Saturday evening. A Central Crime Branch (CCB) policeman who tried to save him was injured.

According to the police, Ranjith Kumar, 35, a resident of GKM Colony in Kolathur, has an assault case and attempt to murder case against him.

On Saturday night, he was standing at VOC Nagar, off New Avadi Road under the Aynavaram police station limits, the police said. Around 9 p.m., a gang surrounded him and got into an argument.

It turned into a fight and the gang attacked him with bill hooks and other sharp weapons.

Satish Kumar, attached to the CCB wing of the Chennai police, who was in the vicinity, tried to save Ranjith Kumar.

“The gang attacked him too and he sustained injuries on his fingers in the left hand and elbow. He is out of danger,” said a senior police officer.

Ranjith Kumar tried to escape in the melee, but was caught by the gang and hacked to death.

The gang members fled the spot, the police said.

‘Personal issues’

The residents lodged a complaint with the Aynavaram police station and they have started an investigation into the case.

“We are questioning three persons, including one Lokesh. It appears the crime was committed over personal issues,” said an investigating officer.
