Gang circulating counterfeit currency busted; 3 arrested

The city police have arrested a gang for circulating fake Indian currency notes (FICN) of Rs. 1,000 denomination for the last six months in different parts of the city, including shopping hubs in T. Nagar and Purasawalkam.

Three men from Assam were arrested and a hunt is on for three others.

The Fishing Harbour police nabbed the men, identified as Hameed Rehman (19), Rafiqul Islam (22) and Fasil Islam (28), on Wednesday evening when they attempted to buy a wristwatch at a showroom on Adam Sahib Street in Royapuram. “The trio had given a thousand rupee counterfeit note following which the shop owner grew suspicious and alerted the police. The suspects led our team who raided the rented house in Manali New Town where the men were staying and found three more fake notes in addition to Rs. 30,000 in original currency and lot of products purchased with the fake notes,” said C. Sridhar, joint commissioner of police, north.

The men had come to Chennai six months ago and were working as security guards at a private firm in Manali. Three of their accomplices had been frequently visiting the city and feeding them with top-quality FICNs suspected to have originated from Maldah district in West Bengal. “The three had circulated the counterfeit currency by shopping in T. Nagar, Purasawalkam, Washermenpet and different parts of the city and had maintained bank accounts to deposit original notes obtained from the exchanges,” Mr. Sridhar added.
