‘Abilities 2010-11,' the national-level games for persons with disabilities, opened here on Friday.

Over 1,000 athletes from various States took part in the opening ceremony at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The games are conducted under the aegis of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The athletes would be competing in five disciplines — athletics, aquatics, badminton, bocce and football.

The games would be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu Tennis Stadium and Aquatic Complex, Velachery. The games are hosted by the Tamil Nadu Chapter of Special Olympics Bharat. ‘Shera' is the mascot for the games. Devanand Maurya, one of the participants from Uttar Pradesh, said that the games were a source of encouragement. In March, the State-level games for the persons with disability will be held in Chennai.
