Free laptops stolen from school

August 23, 2013 02:25 pm | Updated 02:25 pm IST - CHENNAI:

State-sponsored laptops belonging to students of the Government Higher Secondary school in Sholavaram were stolen from the school’s storeroom on Thursday.

The police said around 6.30 a.m., a staff member of the school noticed the lock of the room was broken and the laptops were missing. Immediately, he informed school authorities including the headmaster S. Bhaktavatsalam, who in turn alerted the Sholavaram police. A police team inspected the spot and a case has been registered. “We were supposed to distribute the laptops today but despite tight security including two watchmen, the laptops were stolen,” said Mr. Bhaktavatsalam.

The school has more than 2,000 students. A few months ago, the school authorities received the free laptops from the Tiruvallur collectorate. At a function on Independence Day, the laptops were distributed to 264 students while the rest of the laptops were meant for those who were absent on that day and were kept in the storeroom. “We are questioning some suspects including school staff,” said an officer of the Sholavaram police
