To get the bikes and autorickshaws, that are in disrepair as a result of the recent flooding, back on the roads, 157 automobile service centres across Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur and Cuddalore districts have already started offering free services.
The free service camps will run till December 21.
As of now, four companies — TVS Motors, Bajaj, Yamaha and Royal Enfield — are repairing bikes free of cost. While TVS motors will accept bikes in over 90 centres, Bajaj will get the bikes up and running in 34 centres. Yamaha and Royal Enfield have around 14 and 13 service centres across these four districts respectively. The staff members in some of these service centres say there has been a tremendous rush ever since they opened the doors on Saturday morning. “From the morning, we have received close to 60 bikes which were totally submerged in the floodwaters,” says Vishnu, manager of Kavya Motors. He adds, “we believe the numbers will swell in the coming days. We will need at least two days to service these bikes.” So, what’s really free?
“The labour charges will be written off. However, if there are damages to the parts, we will charge the customers for having these parts replaced,” says Sheela, manager of Maansi Bikes in Nelson Manickam Salai.
