Food stall at Villivakkam station closed down

The lone refreshment outlet functioning on platform one at Villivakkam railway station has shut shop and commuters are upset. The stall stopped opening its shutters from early this month and passengers say this is a loss as it was a place they could grab a quick bite.

According to railway officials, the outlet owner was unhappy about the revised rates, so he decided to fold it up.

Hundreds of commuters from Villivakkam board local trains from the station. At present, the Southern Railway operates 38 EMUs (Electrical Multiple Units) with nine cars and 11 MEMUs (Main Electrical Multiple Units) with eight cars between Chennai Beach and Tiruvallur. At Villivakkam, more than 30,000 commuters use the station to reach central parts of the city via Chennai Central.

“Many suburban commuters have benefited from the refreshment outlet as it stocked beverages, cool drinks, hot milk and snacks at reasonable costs,” said K. Sampath, a commuter from Villivakkam.

Despite being one of the biggest railway stations on the western side of the city, Villivakkam does not have adequate refreshment outlets including newspaper and magazine stalls.

Smaller railway stations like Vysarpadi and Thirumullavoyal have refreshment outlets.

The refreshment outlet was operating on the suburban platform, near the ticket counters towards Arakkonam, making it convenient for commuters to have snacks before boarding local trains.

Many commuters from neighbouring areas use to board small buses outside the railway station to head to their places.

Regular commuters have raised the issue with the local railway station and also written on the complaints book at the railway station, urging the Southern Railway to restore refreshment outlet immediately.

“We have conveyed the same to the higher ups. However, a decision to re-open the closed outlet or opening a new outlet can be taken only at the Southern Railway headquarters,” said a railway official.
