Junction witnesses volume of 18,000 passenger car units an hour

The State Highways Department is considering the construction of a flyover on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai near Koyambedu Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus to decongest two busy junctions.

As cars and two-wheelers vie for space with the buses at the Kaliamman Koil Street-Jawaharlal Nehru Salai junction, vehicles piling up during rush hour is a common feature. Motorists often wait for more than an hour in the inching traffic even during weekends.

The junction near Kaliamman Koil Street, which links Koyambedu with Virugambakkam, witnesses a traffic volume of 18,000 passenger car units per hour,

Highways Department officials said. Motorists from Vadapalani proceeding towards Anna Nagar who often wait for long hours in the traffic would take the flyover near CMBT.

The nearly one-km-long and 11-metre-wide facility with three lanes would end a few metres ahead of the grade separator. Once the flyover is completed, two junctions on the road would become free of traffic signals.

According to Highways Department sources, the proposal is awaiting approval of the State government. The flyover would be similar to that of the facility in Meenambakkam. It would be designed in such a way that the buses do not cause hindrance to the traffic and synchronise with alignment of Chennai Metrorail project.

The flyover has been designed for one-way traffic as the traffic flow from Anna Nagar to Vadapalani is smooth. The existing pattern of traffic arrangement may continue, sources said.

The project is estimated to cost Rs. 50 crore.

While welcoming the initiative, residents of Koyambedu want officials concerned to make traffic arrangements to decongest traffic on Kaliamman Koil Street.

Kaliamman Koil Street gets choked during peak hours as omni buses are often parked on the road to pick up passengers. This has a cascading effect on the traffic on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.

R.Rekha who uses the road regularly, said besides improving the illumination and removing stray animals from Kaliamman Koil Street, the authorities must take measures to regulate parking of buses on both the sides of the road, which prove hindrance to the traffic flow.
