Fire in scrap shop at Tiruvallur

Further investigation is on

Tension prevailed in Andarkuppam, 7 km from Ponneri, as thick smoke engulfed the locality after a fire broke out in a vehicle scrap shop on Friday morning.

According to the police, the shop was run by Adikesavan. He dismantles old vehicles like cars and lorries to earn a living out of the scrap. There were more than 10 employees in the unit. According to Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) officers, they got a call at around 10.15 a.m on Wednesday informing them of a fire in the unit.

“Three fire-fighting vehicles from Ponneri, Gummidipoondi and Gummidipoondi SIPCOT were sent to the location along with 25 personnel. There was thick smoke as tyres and wooden parts of lorries were gutted in the fire. They doused the flames in two hours and brought the situation under control,” a TNFRS officer said.

The TNFRS officer suspects that someone would have set fire to some shrubs situated behind his unit and it would have spread to the unit. “We are investigating,” the officer added.
