Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan on Tuesday urged the State government to take all efforts to ensure the safety of police personnel involved in checking the menace of illegal sand mining in various parts of the State.

Referring to the recent death of constable Jagadish of Vijayanarayanam Police Station in Tirunelveli district, Mr. Vasan urged the police personnel involved in checking the illegal activity to move in groups while going to the site. Mr. Vasan also asked the State government to grant the quantum of solatium requested by the family members of the deceased policeman.

In a statement, CPI (M) State general secretary K. Balakrishnan said apart from arresting those involved in the murder of Jagadeesh, the government should take steps to stop sand smuggling. He also urged the government to provide adequate compensation to the family of the slain constable and a government job for his wife.
