The Coast Guard’s clean-up operations of the oil spill at the Kamarajar Port Ltd continued on Tuesday and traces of the remaining oil were being recovered or dispersed.
The Coast Guard deployed its dedicated pollution control vessel Samudra Pehredar and five other ships to contain, recover and disperse the oil that leaked while being transferred from MT Coral Stars after the oil transfer hose snapped early on Sunday morning.
“The specialised equipment onboard ICGS Samudra Pehredar proved critical for recovering the thick oil mousse and preventing it from reaching the shores. Nearly about five tonnes of viscous mousse has been recovered using weir, disc, brush skimmers and manual mopping using absorbents. Traces of oil effectively dispersed,” the Coast Guard said in a press release.
The Coast Guard also carried out helicopter sorties to aid the ships to identify the locations.
