Engineering aspirants make last-minute dash

The single window counselling for Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2019) for B.E./B.Tech courses continued late into the evening on Tuesday, the last day, as hundreds of candidates and parents arrived at the venue. At the Central Polytechnic College in Taramani, aspirants had comewith the hope of securing a seat. A student from Salem with a cut off of 80.75 said the college authorities had told her there were seats and she could opt for them. Another candidate from Thuraiyur with a cut off of 80.25 said a college in Annanur was willing to admit him.

The authorities, however, told them that their request would be considered only after the counselling for all candidates was completed.

The heavy rush led to police blocking entry for parents, who squatted on the floor outside the counselling centre. Candidates who made a beeline included those who had forgotten to lock in their choice in the fourth round and as a result were not allotted seats and those who wanted a change of college. TNEA officials said they had handed over to the police three persons in the morning who claimed to be representatives of some self-financing colleges to the students.

The last day of counselling was set aside for all candidates who had failed to complete the counselling process for various reasons. The TNEA had also called candidates under the conversion of SCA to SC seats following vacancies in the former category.

In the supplementary counselling held on Sunday and Monday, a total of 3,272 candidates had been allotted seats, officials said.
