Elliot’s Beach Road in Besant Nagar gets recharge wells

For the past few weeks, construction of recharge wells along Elliot’s Beach Road, near Elliot’s beach in Besant Nagar (Zone 13) is under way. The work is being carried out by the Greater Chennai Corporation to prevent inundation of the road. Elliots Beach Road does not have stormwater drains. “Recharge wells will help to tap rainwater. More such wells will be dug in the coming months before the onset of northeast monsoon,” said a Corporation official.

At present, recharge wells are dug at three spots along the stretch including on the service lane. The spots were identified based on inundation during previous monsoon. Each recharge well is around 15 feet deep with steel mesh fencing at a depth of one feet to filter solid waste including pet bottles. The recharge wells will be cleaned and desilted at regular intervals, say civic officials, adding that the initiative to sink recharge wells along the stretch is being carried out on a pilot basis. More such wells will be built depending on the flow of excess rainwater along the stretch.
