As many as 26 elephants from various temples and mutts from across the State were brought to Thekkampatti near Mettuppalayam on Thursday for the 48-day annual rejuvenation camp.

The camp, organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE), will be inaugurated today.

The elephants, mahouts and cavadis, who accompanied the elephants, were welcomed to the camp by organisers.

Though 29 elephants from temples and mutts were scheduled to be brought to Thekkampatti for the rejuvenation camp, organisers said that one attendee may be excluded. Two elephants, one from Tiruchi and another one from Puducherry will be brought in later on Friday.

Officials from HR & CE and the Forest Department on Thursday inspected the six acre campus to see the final arrangements.

The security for the elephant camp has also been tightened as a section of farmers from 23 villages along Thekkampatti have come up against the annual programme citing various reasons.
