A bank manager was conned by two persons who palmed off a bar of soap after promising to sell a phone.
The victim, Ramesh, is a manager with a nationalised bank on Luz Church Road.
Two persons approached Mr. Ramesh stating that they were employees of a phone manufacturing company and were authorised to sell phones to select customers at cheaper rates. They also told him that they had chosen him as a privileged customer.
Mr. Ramesh initially refused the offer but was convinced after a demonstration on a trial phone.
The duo offered the high-end phone, worth around ₹1 lakh in the market, for a mere ₹15,000.
Mr. Ramesh paid the amount and was handed a box.
After they left, he opened the box and was shocked to find a bar of soap, instead of a mobile phone. He rushed to the police station and lodged a complaint with the Mylapore Crime Investigation Police.
K. Senthilmurugan, Crime Inspector, told The Hindu, “We analysed the footage captured from CCTV units installed inside the bank. We have vital clues on the suspects and the case is under investigation. Soon, we will zero in on the accused.”
