The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mamallapuram, Inspector of Police, Tiruporur, and an AIADMK functionary were booked for abetment of suicide, after a bar operator killed himself in the front of the DSP’s office, protesting the corruption among the police and their failure to act upon his complaint against the AIADMK functionary.
Nellaiappan, 37, was running a bar in Tiruporur, which was sublet by Anand, an AIADMK functionary. The victim had run up a huge debt because of the harassment meted out to him by the landowner.
The victim had filed a complaint at the Tiruporur police station seeking action against Anand. After the police did not take any action, Nellaiappan on Tuesday went to the Mamallapuram DSP’s office. Feeling dejected, Nellaiappan doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire. The victim was taken to the Chengalpattu Government General Hospital, from where he was shifted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. He succumbed to his burns on Tuesday night.
A senior official of the Kancheepuram police said the victim had made a dying declaration to a magistrate, narrating the sequence of events which led to his decision. On Wednesday, the Mamallapuram police booked a criminal case against DSP R. Subburaj, Inspector Kannan and Anand under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC.
On instruction of the Kancheepuram District Collector, Excise Department officials conducted inspections at bars functioning illegally and sealed them at the Tiruporur roundtana, near bus stand, Kannagapattu, Kelambakkam and Thaiyur.
