Traffic hit for over four hours; police suspect victim fell asleep while driving

A driver of a container truck died after his vehicle rammed the median on the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway near Vellore and then collided with an oncoming lorry on Wednesday morning.

Traffic on the highway came to a standstill for more than four hours as vehicles piled up. Normalcy returned after the mangled remains of the vehicles were cleared from the spot, said the traffic police.

According to the police, Karan Veer Singh of Uttar Pradesh was transporting consignment from Bengaluru to Chennai. He lost control of the vehicle and rammed the median. The vehicle ran over the median and on to the other side of the road. The driver of the oncoming lorry, Subramani, saw this and jumped out of his vehicle.

Both the lorries collided and in the impact, Karan Veer Singh died on the spot. Cleaner Arul Mani who was in the other lorry sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital. Passersby informed the police.

“We sent the body for post-mortem. We suspect he dozed off while driving, but we cannot confirm it at the moment,” said a police officer. A case has been registered and investigation is on.
