Residents of Pulicat on Wednesday staged a protest demanding that doctors be on duty round the clock at a government hospital in the area and shifting of a Tasmac outlet from the main bazaar.

Durai Mahendran of Tiruvallur Maavattam Paarambariya Aikiya Meenavar Sangam said that every year, at least 30 people from nearby villages in Tiruvallur district died due to absence of doctors at night at the hospital.

“People who need urgent medical care have to be taken to Ponneri, which is 18 km away, or to Government Stanley Hospital,” he said. Two weeks ago, a fisherman, who fell into the water, died on the way to hospital, Mr. Mahendran said.

P.M. Noordeen, president, Tiruvallur Maavattam Meen Thozhilalar Nala Sangam, said the Tasmac outlet was a nuisance to women and school children.
