Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar on Thursday launched 81 mobile health units to prevent mosquito breeding and to spread awareness on dengue, a press release said. The units will visit public places, schools, colleges and government offices to offer medical aid as well as source reduction measures.
The health department held a number of meetings with doctors, nurses and government establishments. Patients must not resort to self-medication, the release reiterated and advised them to visit the nearest government hospital.
Minister visits IIT-M
Later in the day, the Minister visited IIT-Madras and interacted with a healthcare team there. A student of the Institute died of dengue at a private hospital last week. When asked about the measures taken to prevent dengue, P. Sriram, registrar of the Institute, said the Chennai Corporation had recommended several specific steps the college could take.
“Accordingly, building contractors on the campus have been informed to clear water and debris at the sites. Fogging operation is being done regularly in the residence and hostel zones to prevent breeding of mosquitoes,” he said. Anti-larval measures were regularly done in the residential and hostel zones. The Minister visited ESIC Medical College, K.K. Nagar, and the Institute of Child Health, Egmore.
