Defunct pedestrian signal on Kamarajar Salai and Dr. Besant Road intersection puts walkers at risk

The pedestrian signal installed at the intersections of Kamarajar Salai and Dr. Besant Road have been non-functional for some time now. Nobody knows exactly how long, but the non-functional signal is testing the patience of those waiting to cross the road.

The junction is an important link road for motorists, as the stretch leads to Ice House, Royapettah and Anna Salai and has a steady flow of vehicles passing through the day.

Pedestrians have requested the Chennai Traffic Police to ensure functioning of the signals at the earliest.

Dr. Besant Road has separate entry and exit lanes. During the morning and evening rush hour, traffic police personnel are deployed at the exit lane of both the roads to help pedestrians cross.

But, that’s only a temporary solution. Other time of the day walkers are on their own.

Many pedestrians have requested the traffic police to fix the signals.

As per the traffic rules at these intersections, motorists from Light House can proceed towards George Town and vice-versa. Similarly, motorists from Marina Service Roads and from the entry and exit lanes of Dr. Besant Road, can turn left and right to go to Light House and George Town respectively.

Pedestrians can cross when motorists from George Town can take a right turn to enter Dr. Besant Road, but those heading towards Light House from George Town do not stop.

“Motorists do not halt to let pedestrians cross the intersections,” said S. Vasantha, a pedestrian.
