Death of patient sparks protest

May 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - CHENNAI:

Tension prevailed outside the Government Royapettah Hospital on Saturday afternoon after family members of a young man refused to receive his body demanding action against authorities of the Government ESI Hospital in K. K. Nagar, who allegedly failed to treat him during an emergency.

The deceased identified as Deva alias Vijayakumar (23), a construction worker and a resident of Bajanai Koil Street in Vadapalani, developed chest pain on Friday night. His family members rushed him to the ESI hospital, but he died soon after.

Deva’s mother Jayanthi claimed that the hospital authorities did not open the doors of the facility on time and the family members had to bring a stretcher by themselves. By then, Deva had died.

Parents and relatives of the deceased staged a road roko outside the GRH. Police officials reached the spot and pacified the protestors and promised a thorough probe. The group subsequently dispersed.

Ashok Nagar police have registered a case of unnatural death. However, an FIR stating no one is responsible for the demise of the youth has been registered by the police with Jayanthi’s signature.
