Crime Beat — Chains snatched


Unidentified men snatched gold chains from women pedestrians in two localities in the city on Friday.

Police sources said a chain weighing 15 sovereigns was snatched from Rathinamala (34), a resident of Venkatapuram near Kundrathur, when she was walking on Somangalam Road, Kundrathur around 8.30 p.m.

The suspect, who was sitting on the roadside, noticed her walk past him, slowly walked behind her, snatched the chain and fled.

In another incident, a man riding a motorcycle snatched a six sovereign chain from Savithri (50) when she was standing outside her house in Santhosh Nagar, Mangadu, police sources said.

Murder suspect dies in hospital

A 25-year-old man, who consumed cleaning acid after allegedly stabbing his elderly uncle and aunt in Nungambakkam on Friday night following a property dispute, died in a hospital early on Saturday. His uncle died on Friday night.

The Nungambakkam police said Mahadevan of Thirumoorthy Nagar 4th Street and his father had an argument with Ezhumalai (70), a watchman and his wife Govindammal (60), over distribution of their ancestral property. In a fit of rage Mahadevan stabbed the elderly couple and Ezhumalai died on the way to a hospital.

Soon, Mahadevan ran into his house and drank a bottle of acid kept in the bathroom. Relatives rushed him to a private hospital on Greams Road where he died at 3.30 a.m. on Saturday, sources said.

Burglary attempt

Two burglars, who allegedly broke into a house in Kodungaiyur in the early hours on Saturday, fled after the residents raised an alarm. Police sources said the incident occurred at the house of Sandra Stephen on Kattabomman Street around 2 a.m. Sandra and her daughter who live in the house, woke up after hearing something unusual and spotted two men with oil all over their bodies. When the men threatened the women with knife, they screamed for help waking up the neighbours. Immediately, the men fled from the house, sources added. Kodungaiyur police are investigating.
