Chennai Corporation will soon start penalising people who pollute the city’s waterways.
Owing to a rise in the number of illegal sewage inlets and pollution of waterways, the Corporation is planning to penalise building owners who let sewage in drains.
After a meeting with various agencies of Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on Thursday, the civic body is exploring the penal provisions in by-laws to cope with illegal sewage inlets. Currently, Chennai Corporation officials are unable to impose fine for residents who pollute drains or waterways. “We have plugged 4,466 sewage inlets in the city. Fine amount has largely not been collected,” said an official.
“Work on plugging sewage inlets is going on every day. But the exact number of sewage inlets is yet to be identified. This has to be expedited,” the official added. The civic body will procure machines at Rs.44 crore to be deployed for cleaning drains and canals.
After plugging illegal sewage connections, a drive to provide sewage connections by Metrowater will begin shortly.
