Chromepet residents got together on Sunday to give a warm send-off to Yesu, who recently retired after working as a conservancy employee in the Pallavaram Municipality for 37 long years.

Appreciating his work, the Chromepet New Colony Residents’ Welfare Association felicitated him at a function held in Radha Nagar New Colony on Sunday. P. Dhansingh, former Pallavaram MLA, presented a cash award of ₹10,000, collected from residents, to Mr. Yesu.

A large number of people from various walks of life participated and praised him for keeping their streets clean.

A native of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Yesu joined the Pallavaram Municipality as a temporary employee at the age of 23.

Serving with a smile

V. Santhanam, president of the association, lauded Mr. Yesu as a rare human being who did any work with a smile. “Mr. Yesu did not mind removing the carcasses of animals or the garbage that blocked stormwater drains or helping bury bodies of orphans whenever the police sought his help.”

Mr. Dhansingh, remembering Yesu’s work when he was the chairman of the municipality, said the employee was seen every day on the street, going about his work diligently.

A family man too

He never sought leave for any personal or health reasons during his service. Mr. Yesu did not even take sick leave, he added.

The well-wishers appreciated Mr. Yesu not just for his commitment to work, but also to his family in educating his three children.
