Condition of woman with allergic reaction stable: doctors

An 18-year-old city college student has been at Government Stanley Hospital for a week now. She is being treated for a severe skin allergic reaction that is akin to about 65 per cent burns. The condition of the woman is said to be stable now, say doctors. According to them, the woman is said to have contracted the allergy a day after being treated at a private hospital on Butt Road, St. Thomas Mount, for high fever. Alleging wrong treatment, the woman’s father, S. Kosalaraman of Alandur, lodged a complaint with the Nandambakkam police on Thursday, who transferred the case to St. Thomas Mount.

According to the police, the woman who was admitted into the private hospital on May 23 for fever, was administered an injection. A few days later, the fever relapsed and her skin began to peel away, said Mr. Kosalaraman.

On May 29, he admitted his daughter to the Government Stanley Hospital, where she was treated at the dermatology department. Doctors said that the young woman had self-medicated for a few days before going to the private clinic. “She came in a very serious condition. She is stable now, but anything could happen,” they said.

Blood tests have been conducted. One of the doctors said that it is still not clear whether the young woman is suffering from an allergy or is affected by a virus. “It may take another week or more for her to recover. She is being treated under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme,” he added.
