A 47-year-old man underwent a complex surgery at Government Stanley Hospital recently. The man from Ponneri had come in to the neurology department with weakness of the left hand, difficulty in moving his right hand and slipping of his right foot over three months.
The patient was an alcoholic and a smoker, and had been diabetic and hypertensive for the past five years. He was referred to the department of vascular surgery. Here, he was diagnosed with 100 per cent blockages in his carotid arteries. He needed a revascularisation of the vessels supplying his head and neckwithout compromising blood supply to the brain. The patient underwent a carotid endarterectomy – a procedure to remove the plaque clogging the arteries, followed by a procedure to insert a synthetic graft. It was successful, and the post-operative period has been uneventful, the release said.
