The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Commissioner for the Welfare of the Differently abled to be present in the court on January 22 to explain the government’s stand with regard to filling vacancies of teachers meant for the physically challenged.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice S.K. Kaul and Justice M.M.Sundresh passed the order on a petition by the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers.
The organisation had sought to quash a notification of the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB) of July 14 last year for the direct recruitment of B.T. assistants in 2012-13. It sought a fresh notification by complying with a G.O. of March last year. As per the order, 1107 backlog vacancies were to be filled by the physically challenged through the TRB. The organisation said persons with disabilities were not being provided equal opportunity.
The Bench said it was still not clear about the exact number of vacancies. Undisputedly, there were 1107 vacancies. It directed the Commissioner to come to the court on the next hearing date to explain the government stand.
