In view of the below-normal rainfall during the northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday sanctioned ₹158 crore for taking up drinking water supply schemes across the State.

While ₹122 crore was earmarked for Chennai Metrowater to take up suitable drinking water supply works, a sum of ₹36 crore was sanctioned to the TWAD Board to take up drinking water supply works in the urban and rural areas of Tamil Nadu.

During a meeting chaired by him in the Secretariat on Thursday, Mr. Palaniswami instructed officials to ensure proper water supply to the general public, both in the rural and urban areas, without any problem in the ensuing summer.

Fast completion

The Chief Minister also insisted that Metrowater, TWAD Board, Rural Development and MAWS departments should complete the ongoing water supply works quickly and put them to use.

“Monitoring officers should visit their respective districts at least three times in the month of February and ensure completion of ongoing Water Supply works and proper distribution of water,” the Chief Minister instructed.

“They should also check if all the streetlights are burning,” Mr. Palaniswami added.
