Clear garbage from drains, culverts, say Madipakkam residents

Choked, they don’t do their job of carrying rainwater to the Pallikaranai marsh

Residents of Rajaji Nagar, Ram Nagar and Sadasiva Nagar, Madipakkam have requested the officials of Greater Chennai Corporation to desilt stormwater drains and culverts before the onset of northeast monsoon.

M. Anbalagan, president, Madipakkam North East Residents Welfare Association (MANERWA), says, “The stormwater drains are choked with garbage, construction debris and sewage. As a result, the drains are unable to carry rainwater to the culverts. The culverts are also similarly blocked and therefore rainwater from culverts does not flow into the Pallikaranai marsh, but onto the road.” Due to sewage stagnation in culverts and stormwater drains, the stretch has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, exposing residents to health hazards. In addition, the level of stormwater drains is not uniform. As a result, at several places, the drains are not connected to culverts, which results in flooding of the locality. Residents want the drains and the culverts to be desilted and deepened.
