The Chennai Corporation council on Friday requested the State government to rename the new budget restaurants ‘Amma Unavagam’.

“The Council has passed the resolution following requests from a number of residents to rename the budget restaurants,” said Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa inaugurated 15 budget restaurants in all zones of the city. The Corporation will open 24 more ‘Amma Unavagams’ on the Chief Minister’s birthday on Sunday.

“The Chennai Corporation will find suitable buildings on rent if officials are unable to find a suitable place in a ward,” said Mr. Duraisamy. At least 100 more ‘Amma Unavagams’ will be opened by March 31.

Women from self-help groups have been given the responsibility of managing the restaurants. The women workers will receive Rs. 300 a day as wages, said Mr. Duraisamy.

The Amma Unavagams will offer idli (100 g) for a rupee, sambar rice (350 g) at Rs. 5 and curd rice (350 g) at Rs. 3.
