The Chennai Corporation has identified 25 locations for construction of modern fish markets.

Except Manali, Madhavaram, Valasaravakkam and Alandur, all the other zones of the civic body have submitted lists with plots of land for the setting up of such facilities. The markets will have modern amenities including better storage facilities with innovative design elements.

Tiruvottiyur will have the largest number of markets. Pieces of land in four areas — Kathivakkam High Road, Gandhi Market, Wimco Nagar and Pattinathar Koil Street — have been earmarked for the purpose. Tondiarpet zone will have modern markets in Sastri Nagar and on Parthsarathy Street. Appasamy Street in Royapuram, CTH Road in Ambattur zone, Jagannathapuram in Anna Nagar zone will host the only modern markets in the zones.

Pieces of lands in Anjukam Nagar and Perambur Jamalia in Thiru.Vi.Ka.Nagar zone; Canal Bank Road, Avvai Shanmugam Salai and Norton Road in Teynampet; 80-feet Road, Dr.Nair Road and Gangaiamman Koil Street in Kodambakkam; Besant Nagar First Avenue and Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam in Adyar; Thulukanathamman Koil Street, ECR Road Kottivakkam and VGP Layout Palavakkam in Perungudi zone and Pandiyan Road, Thoraipakkam, ECR Vettuvankeni and Panaiyur in Sholinganallur zone have also been identified for modern fish markets.

Some of the modernised markets are likely to become more popular than the existing fish markets in the city in areas such as Chintadripet, Saidapet and Pattalam.
